How does a guy pick the perfect engagement ring for his future wife? When it comes to engagement ring shopping there are a few tips every guy needs to know.
Find out her ring size: You can try taking a ring of hers and slipping it on your own finger and take a note on where it stops on your finger. Or if you don’t mind involving a friend or family member they can always get the ring size for you.
Ask others for help: Asking her best friend or family member may help your search for that perfect ring go much smoother. While someone else’s opinion may help, you may risk blowing the surprise of the proposal.
Know her style: Does she like contemporary designs or more traditional? Is her jewelry flashy or more understated? Does she usually wear silver-colored jewelry or pieces made of yellow gold? Pay attention to subtle hints she may drop. This will make choosing the perfect ring easier!
Don’t forget to ask your jeweler questions. After all, that’s what we are here for!
Finally don’t stress, after all you’ve found the perfect girl… the hardest part is done!

On Saturday we were thrilled to be apart of a heartwarming moment. Our customer, Patrick, proposed to his girlfriend, Catherine, at our store. After seeing the ring, Patrick dropped to one knee. Champagne was flowing and pictures were taken. We were so happy to celebrate this special occasion! Congratulations Patrick and Catherine!

Many wonder why we wear our wedding rings on the left hand. The wedding ring has been worn on the third finger of the left hand since Roman Times. The Romans believed that the vein in that finger runs directly to the heart. So why a wedding ring? The wedding ring is a never-ending circle, which symbolizes everlasting love. It is true that a wedding ring is a token of possession, but rather than symbolizing a man possessing a woman, it is the woman's possession of something valuable given by the man. Hence the current practice of using a precious metal, such as gold, platinum or palladium. Most couples choose a precious metal and this dates back to the ancient days of marriage when gold rings were circulated as currency. The groom-to-be would offer his bride-to-be a gold ring both as his partial payment and as a symbol of his intentions. Wedding tradition is still very important today, and even with metal prices being at an all time high, many brides and grooms are still exchanging vows wearing gold and platinum bands.
Featured wedding bands, from left to right, include Katharine James Platinum “Bella's Love” Wedding Band, Calvin’s Collection 6mm Platinum Hammered and Grooved Men's Wedding Band and Michael B. Platinum Pave Diamond “Lace” Wedding Band.

Ross and Amanda got engaged at one of Austin’s most romantic spots! Amanda had no idea her night out with a friend would turn into an unforgettable proposal overlooking Lady Bird Lake!
Ross shares their story, “I proposed to Amanda at sunset at Mt. Bonnell in Austin on Saturday March 19th. Amanda had no clue of anything, as she thought she was going to a SXSW show with a friend. When her friend turned down Mt.Bonnell that is when she got suspicious. I was waiting at the top of the hill and once I saw Amanda walking up the hill towards me, I held out my hands to her. I told her she was my best my friend, my partner, and I asked her if she would also be my wife. She said yes, which I confirmed twice. We drank our wine and watched the sun set over Lake Austin. Afterwards, on our way to dinner, Amanda looks up from her left hand and tells me, “I have to call my mama!” Darla doesn’t answer. Amanda turns to me and says, “She never has her phone on her!” We walked into the restaurant and are led around the corner where both of our families greet us with a “Congratulations!” At the site of the family, Amanda turned to me and burst into tears.”
Ross customized a beautiful one of a kind Varna engagement ring. After his engagement, Ross wanted to share about his experience in our store, “Calvin’s was great to work with from the start. During my search for the perfect engagement ring, I visited five or six jewelry stores around town. It really was not until I found Calvin’s that I thought I had a place I could do business with. Annie was very courteous toward me and my fiancé, and her expertise made the whole process go smoothly.”
Ross and Amanda picked out the perfect wedding bands and will be having a fall wedding. We want to wish Ross and Amanda a lifetime of love and happiness. Congratulations to you both!

This is one proposal story we absolutely had to share with our readers. Wayne and Kennedy’s story warmed our hearts with their “double” proposal!
Kennedy writes: Wayne proposed two days before Christmas. He took me to see the 38th street lights and then suggested we stop in one of the little art galleries nearby. Walking through the gallery, I stumbled upon a painting with the words “Kennedy, will you marry me?” He looked over, dropped to one knee and pulled a Calvin’s ring out of his pocket. I said yes over and over. Two months later on Valentine’s Day, I took Wayne to an open mic night at the Hideout coffee shop. Love was the theme. Toward the end, I got on stage for the first time ever and read a poem about falling in love with Wayne. The end of the poem was a proposal, ending in Wayne on stage wearing a Calvin’s men’s band.
After purchasing the ring and wedding bands from Calvin’s, Kennedy had some very nice words to share about their experience. “Shopping around for rings was a long process that began and ended at Calvin’s. We trusted Angelica and were very happy to share such a special moment with her. She sincerely gets excited for her customers and patiently waits as they consider all the options. Angelica and the staff have been extremely welcoming and celebratory.
Wayne proposed with a 5th generation family diamond set in a gorgeous Calvin’s collection engagement ring and Wayne still talks about Calvin’s mimosas he had when he purchased Kennedy’s ring! We are so happy for Wayne and Kennedy and we wish them a lifetime of happiness.

After dating for nearly six years, Jeff surprised Shelby with an incredible proposal on a helicopter ride over Austin. Here is her story:
It was Valentine's Day, and Jeff was being awfully secretive about our plans, which definitely wasn't the norm. We ended up in San Marcos after the long drive from north Austin, with me guessing the entire way what we were doing. Unfortunately, it wasn't outlet shopping, but we had an amazing brunch with yummy mimosas at the Cool Mint Cafe. I was still baffled as to why we were in San Marcos (assuming Jeff had simply waited too long and couldn't get a brunch reservation in downtown Austin), and was still more baffled when we got back in the car and started driving toward the middle of nowhere and not back to Austin. After a long drive through pastures and crops, I saw a giant sign on the side of the road: "SKYDIVING." As we started to turn into the driveway, I didn't know what to think! That's not an idea you just spring on someone, especially when they're wearing cute shoes! Jeff said "No, no. We're not going skydiving; we're not even getting into a plane." This caused confusion, since we were at an airport. Once we drove a little bit further - I saw it. A helicopter fueled up and ready to go, just for us! After a beautiful flight over Austin, where we met, dated, and fell in love, Jeff pulled the most beautiful ring out of his pocket and asked me to be his wife. Elated, I said "yes!" about a million times, and the pilot joked that he was glad they weren't going to go with Plan B and drop me off somewhere for saying "no." It was a completely unexpected, grand romantic gesture from a man who isn't usually prone to them. I couldn't have asked for a better proposal, and I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful ring!
It is so incredibly special that all of the girls at Calvin's had such a hand in creating my beautiful ring! It was so fun that everyone kept the secret with my husband and I was kept out of the loop when he picked up the ring. When I look at my left finger I don't just think of the sacred vows I took on my wedding day; I think about the hours of time spent by my amazing co-workers, vendors, and jewelers creating it just for me! -Shelby
Since the proposal, Shelby and Jeff got married and moved to Houston to begin their lives together. We miss seeing Shelby's smiling face everyday but she will always be apart of our Calvin's family! Congratulations to you both!
