I’m sure you’ve heard the term “The 4 C’s” when shopping for diamonds. This is a quick overview about what you should know about the 4 C’s before you shop!
Carat is the unit of measurement used to describe the weight of diamonds. 1.00carat equals .20 grams. Carat weight is commonly expressed in points or fractions. There are 100 points in 1 carat. For instance, 0.33 carats is generally expressed as 33 points, or 1/3 of a carat.
Cut describes the face up shape and style of facets the diamond has. It also refers to the proportions of the diamond. Cut is a diamond's most important characteristic. It has the greatest overall influence on a diamond's beauty. When a diamond is cut with the proper proportions, light is returned out of the top of the diamond. If the diamond is cut too shallow the light leaks out of the bottom. If it’s cut too deep the light escapes out of the side. This is important to you because this relates to the amount of light that a diamond returns to you = THE SPARKLE!
Clarity has six possible grades that refer to the size, location and number of internal inclusions or external blemishes viewed by 10x magnification. Clarity should be thought of as a diamond’s fingerprint. The grades begin with Flawless (FL) for a diamond with no internal inclusions or external blemishes. Next is Internally Flawless (IF) followed by Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1-2). VVS diamonds show very few, small inclusions. Very Slightly Included (VS1-2) is next followed by Slightly Included (SI1-2). SI clarity stones show inclusions that will easily be seen with 10x magnification. Lastly, Included (I1-2-3) diamonds are highly included and inclusions may be seen without magnification.
Color begins with D and ends with Z, before “fancy” color grades begin. D is the grade given to a diamond that is completely colorless. Most diamonds set in engagement rings today are in the near-colorless range with G/H color.
